Police in Kwara State have arrested one
armed robber in connection with a robbery
incident in which no fewer than 13 traders
from Ilesa in Osun State were robbed along
Tsaragi-Lafiagi-Yikpata highway at
gunpoint.
The robbers, it was gathered, intercepted
the traders on their way to Gbugbu market
in Edu Local Government Area of the state
and robbed them of over N1 million.
While parading the prime suspect, the
state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ambrose
Aisabor, said four persons were involved in
the robbery but one was arrested while
trying to escape.
Aisabor said two AK 47 riffles, four
magazines, local charm and N233,225;00
were recovered from them.
According to the police boss, “On March 5,
2014 at about 1050 hrs, based on
intelligence report, the men of the Federal
Highway team of the command along
Tsaragi\Lafiagi\Yikpata road intercepted a
vehicle, Opel Vetral with registration no.
Plateau, BSA 24 SA with four occupants.
“While searching the vehicle, one of the
suspects was arrested and the
aforementioned were recovered from the
robbers.”
According to the police commissioner, the
arrested suspect, Bala Muhammed, said he
came from Nassarawa State with three
others on the run, adding that investigation
was ongoing to ascertain if they are Boko
Haram members.
Speaking with journalists, one of the
traders said: “We were robbed at gunpoint
where we camped out for the night before
continuing our journey the next morning.”
Another trader, identified as Taiwo
Olayemi, said the gunmen collected all the
cash in their custody and beat her during
the operation that lasted about 30 minutes.
The traders, who stormed the police
headquarters while the suspect was being
paraded, appealed to government to come
to their aid.
